‘Say where you’re from without saying where you’re from’ by Maggie Bowyer

I’m from a downtown full of empty showrooms packed for two weeks a year / I’m from furniture market and the black market / I’m from the highest point in the state yet I’m always looking down / I am from streets without nightlights twinkling, kids trespassing just to get home, banging doors and kickbacks masking all the drive-bys / Where I’m from we have funerals instead of prom / Where I am from we don’t front, just run / Where I am from worried my dad yet he’s the one who fled / Where I’m from, I’m not alone with my daddy issues / Where I’m from, there’s a lack of harmless happenings so we have to manufacture our own fun / Where I’m from, too many of my friends never made it home / Where I’m from is a lonely town, not much more than a graveyard now
